American illustrator John Paul Ferrara has returned to work after losing his sight, thanks to AI. This was reported by News 12 New Jersey.
Ferrara spent nearly 40 years creating covers for romance novels. In 2020, he underwent surgery to remove a benign brain tumor, which resulted in almost complete vision loss.
He turned to AI tools in August 2025. According to media reports, Ferrara experimented with ChatGPT and Gemini, using detailed descriptions instead of short prompts. Drawing on his extensive experience, he meticulously described lighting, colors, angles, composition, character placement, and other parameters.
Since he couldn’t see the final images, his caregivers helped verify and describe the results.

Throughout his career, Ferrara created around 1,000 covers and received over 20 awards for outstanding craftsmanship from the Romance Writers of America. His work is divided into two main categories: classical painting and commercial book illustrations.
The artist created advertising projects for Swiss jewelry brand Chopard and Oral-B. His works graced the cover of fashion magazine Zink (September 2004) and were used in the design of the True Romance slot machine line (2005), installed in casinos worldwide.
Over the past year, Ferrara has focused on creating spiritually themed works and shares them on social media:
