
Quantinuum and Taiwanese computing infrastructure manufacturer Quanta Computer have signed an agreement to jointly develop a hardware platform for future large-scale quantum systems.
The companies aim to transition quantum equipment production from laboratory setups to a more modular and industrial model.
From Laboratory to Industrial Production
Under the agreement, the companies plan to jointly develop hardware infrastructure, systems engineering, and manufacturing processes for the next generations of Quantinuum’s quantum computers. Work has already begun, with partners designing new components focused on modularity, production reproducibility, and scalability.
For Quantinuum, the partnership addresses a key industry challenge—moving from creating individual complex setups to producing systems that can be manufactured and deployed in large quantities.
“Quantum computing needs to transition from physics achievements in the lab to achievements in system production that can be deployed and operated at scale,” said Quantinuum CEO Rajib Hazra.
Quanta Computer, in turn, has expertise in the industrial production of complex computing infrastructure. The Taiwanese company is among the world’s largest manufacturers of servers and systems for cloud and high-performance computing.
Focus on Trapped-Ion Technology
The partnership is directly linked to the trapped-ion architecture used by Quantinuum. The company builds its processors based on the QCCD (Quantum Charge-Coupled Device) approach, where ions are moved between separate zones of the quantum system.
Quantinuum has already commercially deployed several generations of such systems. The company claims its QCCD implementation has achieved one of the industry’s best accuracies for two-qubit operations.
The next step will be creating infrastructure capable of supporting significantly larger systems with error correction.
Quanta to Aid in Scaling Challenges
Quanta specializes in transforming complex computing architectures into industrially producible systems and global supply chains.
Quantinuum expects that the collaboration will allow for the synchronous development of technology, production, and supply chains. This approach should bridge the gap between prototyping a quantum computer and its commercial deployment.
However, the companies have not yet disclosed specific future production volumes, the agreement’s cost, or the timeline for launching mass production of new systems.
Quantinuum Accelerates Commercialization
The partnership with Quanta follows several steps by Quantinuum towards commercializing its technology. In August, the company signed a multi-year agreement with Oracle, under which its Helios quantum computer will be hosted in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s data center and made available to the cloud platform’s clients.
Additionally, Quantinuum recently reported achieving nearly a 800-fold increase in logical accuracy on Helios.
Earlier, in May, IBM Quantum’s global sales director Petra Florisun announced the beginning of the practical era of quantum computing. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna expects investments in this area to “noticeably” impact profits by 2028.
