Snap Inc. has unveiled SPECS, a portable computer in the form of augmented reality glasses. The device is now available for pre-order at a price of $2195.
Shipments to the US, UK, and France will begin this fall.
SPECS operate independently without the need for a smartphone or external modules. The glasses weigh between 132 and 136 grams and are made from TR90 polymer. Device specifications include:
- 51-degree field of view;
- two Snapdragon processors;
- signal latency of 7 milliseconds;
- up to 4 hours of operation on a single charge (up to 20 hours with the case).
The lenses feature an electrochromic coating, allowing them to adjust tint within 10 seconds based on lighting conditions.
The device runs on Snap OS, supporting gesture and voice control. Users have access to navigation, work tools, and educational applications.
Developers have received an updated Lens Studio toolkit for creating AR effects. The system includes AI assistants capable of analyzing the environment in real-time.
Snap emphasizes data protection. The glasses have an LED indicator that lights up during video recording. Most data is processed directly on the device without cloud transmission. Users can manage sync history and delete recordings themselves.
In June, Meta removed facial recognition components from the latest version of the Meta AI app for smart glasses following a WIRED investigation.
