
In the spring of 2026, the US military prepared to intercept a Chinese ship in the Middle East based on a false intelligence report generated by AI, according to a CNN report on September 18.
The document claimed the ship was carrying components related to a nuclear weapons program. According to four CNN sources, armed military personnel were ready to board the vessel, and aircraft were already airborne.
Before the operation commenced, more experienced analysts rechecked the initial data and discovered the error. The actual cargo of the ship remains unknown to the publication. One source described the report as “completely false.”
The US Pacific Special Operations Command and the Pentagon did not respond to journalists’ inquiries.
How the Error Occurred
An analyst from the special operations unit uploaded intelligence about the ship’s manifest into a chatbot, using data from the US Pacific Special Operations Command. It is unclear whether a commercial model or a government internal system was used.
The neural network cross-referenced open-source information with classified signals intelligence data and incorrectly identified the cargo. The analyst then used AI again to format the conclusions into a standard intelligence report and sent it to the military.
According to CNN sources, the use of such tools in the military and intelligence remains decentralized, with different structures employing their own systems and security protocols. There is no unified standard for verifying generated information.
One source noted that similar “hallucinations” have occurred with AI use by US intelligence agencies:
“Artificial intelligence allows you to arrive at a bad idea faster.”
The military is also increasingly using neural networks for intelligence analysis and target selection. A CNN source stated that AI use in these tasks is expanding, yet clear rules on the human role in preventing erroneous strikes are still lacking.
In June, Bloomberg journalists reported that the Pentagon had secretly approved an updated doctrine for using AI in battlefield target selection.
