Xanadu Aims for Over 1000 Logical Qubits by 2031

Canadian company Xanadu Quantum Technologies Limited unveiled a roadmap aiming to achieve over 1000 logical qubits by 2031.

The path to this goal includes transitioning to fault-tolerant computing and constructing a quantum data center.

From 200 to 1000 Qubits

Xanadu plans to reach up to 200 logical qubits by 2029, 500 by 2030, and over 1000 by 2031. These are projected technological targets, as the company has not yet achieved these milestones.

The main task for the coming years is to reduce photon losses, the primary source of errors in Xanadu’s architecture. The company aims to decrease its key loss metric from 24.1x in 2026 to 1.0x by 2030.

Focus on Error Correction

Xanadu’s architecture employs a combination of GKP encoding and qLDPC codes for error correction. The company plans to enhance the reliability of logical qubits by improving the characteristics of physical photons.

Xanadu aims to achieve fault-tolerant computing by 2028–2029 and reduce the target logical error rate to 10⁻¹⁶ by 2030.

The company also plans to build a Qubit Factory in 2026–2027 and a quantum data center in 2029–2030. The photonic architecture is expected to operate at room temperature and scale through modular systems connected in a network.

From Qubits to Data Center

Xanadu is focusing on producing photonic components using silicon processes. The company is constructing a 158,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Toronto for testing, integrating photonic chips, and assembling rack-level modules.

Simultaneously, the company is developing PennyLane, an open platform for quantum application development. According to Xanadu, more than 150 universities in 35 countries use it, with 51 simulators and quantum devices accessible through a single API.

Xanadu plans to monetize its ecosystem through corporate training, applied algorithm development, future cloud services, and equipment sales.

As of June 30, 2026, the company estimated its total available funding at approximately $686 million, including $312.8 million in cash and equivalents, $232.8 million available under a SATM agreement with Yorkville Advisors, and about $140.2 million (195 million CAD) in confirmed funding from the Canadian government.

Earlier, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna stated that investments in quantum computing will significantly impact the corporation’s revenue and profits by 2028 or 2029.
